OHS SENIORS TAKE THE CITY REIGNS DURING STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY

A group of 50 Oxford High School seniors, elected by their classmates, continued the city’s decades-old tradition of becoming part of city government during the annual Student Government Day on April 30, 2024.

The students spent the day shadowing the actual offices to which they had been elected – from mayor to juror – during the day-long activities during which they infused the sometimes-mundane workings of municipal government with their youthful spirit and good humor.

Mayor Alton Craft welcomed the group, thanking them for their interest in city government, before they dispersed to tour the East Metro Area Crime Center and traveled to the many departments to learn of what they offer and how they complete the tasks for which they are formed.

The student mayor and city council went through a meeting where they passed resolutions, including the creation of a fine arts facility for the high school and a farmer’s market.

Students then awaited the fun part of the day: two of the high school faculty members, chosen by the group and as a total surprise, were arrested at the high school and taken by a phalanx of Oxford Police vehicles to Municipal Court for “trial.”

English instructor Megan Boozer and media instructor Candace Finley were the day’s “honorees,” and the students cheered as they were brought into the Municipal Courtroom donning their orange jumpsuits.

The student judge, attorneys, and jurists had an energetic and entertaining trial date planned for the two teachers, which ended – to no one’s surprise – with both good-naturedly found to be “guilty.”

After the trip to court, the students were treated to lunch at the Oxford Civic Center.
